HI DX

Got anything at all to say about either radio towers or scanner frequencies, or anything related to radio in general, here's where you go.

HI DX

Post by leeroy_t »

We leave for Hawaii on Sunday. My DX hypothesis is that I think I should be able to hear some SF, LA, SD, TJ 50kW stations. We will see if that is the case or not.

First mainland stations heard: 1090 KPTK Seattle, 1120 KPNW Eugene, 1190 KEX Portland. Not what I expected to hear.

ELl,
I would expect you may be able to hear Japan or the Philippines, Maybe China. Even some Mexican. I am interested to see what you can get.

I bet you could get all the stations between the Islands.

Haven't been able to hear Hilo stations or all 1 kw Honolulu or Lihue. Asia much farther than US from here.

Your best bet to hear Asia would be right as or after the sun is setting. If you have a radio with analog tuning (but a digital display works too) you might have to tune off frequency to hear Asia stations as I think they are on different spacing.

I don't think u understand the distance involved. From N. CA the furthest station I have is KSTP which is about 1500 miles away. Seattle is about 2600 miles from here in HI. Tokyo is about 4000 miles and Manila is about 5300 miles away. probably too far to hear.

Hea... you may be right. There is a guy in Toledo Washington (Global Tuners) who has a huge antenna system and he says he can hear Asia stations.

3 LA stations tonight. KFI 640, KTNQ 1020, KNX 1070. One possible Asia station on 740. My internet is on Carolyn's phone so maybe you can research it for me. Thought i might hear kcbs but it must be something from Asia. Let me know if u can find anything. This was all by car dx tonight.

The final results of the HI DX are posted on my webpage:

http://www.angelfire.com/mt2/rmwdx/amhawaii.html

I basically heard every HI station except 1 or 2 low powered stations on Kauai. I confirmed my prediction that I could hear the mainland US, including three states, CA, OR, WA. I also heard a strange Asian station on 740 that I have yet to confirm. I'll add more description of methods and such to the page soon, and maybe a map or two.
