The Aviator (or "Heaviator")

Postby TheStuboy » January 19th, 2005, 4:51 pm

Note, this review will contain spoilers.

Basically, the movie is about Aviation pioneer and hollywood hotshot Howard Hughes' life between the late 20s and the late 40s. The movie begins and you have no idea what is going on. A mother is washing some crusties out of a litlle kids butt while he is trying to succesfully spell quarantee (see I can't even do it.) Flash forward to the 1920s (the titles tell us where we are and who is who) and we see Hughes working furiously on his film "Hells Angels"
and then three hours later, the movie ends. There is too much material to explain here, go to Yahoo! movies http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&id=1808411951&cf=info&intl=us for a full bio of the film.

Leo did a good job throughout the whole movie but was a bit over doing it with the obsessive compulsive sindrome scenes. He is convincing and even looks like the real Hughes.

The guy from Boogie Nights (John C. Reily) has a short part in this film as Howard's financial consultant, and he pulls it off nicely.

Alec Baldwin is stiff as usual, seeing as the last successful film he was in was Pearl Harbor, and he was stiff in that one too. He has constant turtle face and has spurs of bad acting.
The guy that was in "Mash" (Alan Ada) is a super crusty senator from Maine who wants nothing more than to stop Hughes aircraft from ever becoming popular (or TWA for that matter). Like I said, he had crusty (constipated) face all through out the movie, but did an overall good job.

Kate Beckinsale had a short part in this film, she did fine, although I couldn't differentiate between her and this other girl who looks exactly the same.

Cate Blanchet did a mediocre job playing Katherine Hepburn. She too has a tendancy to overdo it. She also has a big nose.

The special effects are almost non existant in this film but when they are in use, they are done well, like the scene with the plane crashing through the house in Beverly Hills (which can be seen in the trailer.)

The story and directing are a bit sloppy however, and I felt it jumped around quite too much and often I didn't know what was going on. Also, the movie gets slow at times and makes you wish it would hurry up.
I thought Leo did a good job with the OCD, except he may have overdone it a bit. Thats probably what saved the storyline towards the end.

This is only one of a few movies of Martin Scorsese's direction I've actually seen. He does have his good moments in the film but , again, half of the movie was really slow.

Overall, I was entertained by this movie, but was disappointed that it was so long and often slow. The actors all did good (except Baldwin which was to be expected) in their respected roles, and it is a good history flick if you ever want to see one.

Wish I had 135 cameras to film a movie, course thats the way of the future, the way of the future, the way of the future, the way of the future.

Freddie Farz Jr. viewed this movie last week but lost the ticket stub so no absolute record was kept. DOH!

It's My Review, Its My Child

Postby Kaing of Kaings » January 28th, 2005, 9:36 pm

Hea,

I just saw The Aviator with an undisclosed woman since it is up for all these Oscars. Anyway, I thought Leo did a terrific job and while I haven't seen the other leading males performaces. He plays the obsessive compullsive Howare Huges, the movie and airplane tycoon who scores with all the hollywood hotties at the time and likes drinking bottles of milk. He has an obsession about staying away from germs and from the movie, you can tell that his life is going to eventually be screwed up, like when he locked himself in a penthouse in Vegas and didn't touch anything, just like Leeroy Turtlehead described what happens to Monte Burns in the Simpsons. (By the way, Leeroy Turtlehead is up for Best Actor for The Stu Supremacy in the Dingleberry Awards.) I would sure like to win the golden Dingleberry one of these days.

Anyway, the movie also stars Kate Blanchet, Kate Beckensale, Alan Alda, Alec Baldwin, and also has Cameos from Jude Law, Willem Dafoe, and Gwen Steffani. They all did good with their roles and while Alec Baldwin is a good actor in my opinion (especially in his Beetlejeuce days) now, he has a rather stiff , turtleheaded face acting style which was potrayed nicely in America...Fuck Yea... (Team America, World Police).

Anyway, I aggree with Stuboy, While this was an entertaining movie, it did have its slow moments. I pretty much knew what was going on through out the film and its hard to shove the life of Howard Huges into 3 hours, so I give Martin Scorsese some credit for that. But , like most of his other films, they seem too big for themselves, and kind of stubble along the way. Some of this other movies like Gangbangers of New York and Bringing Out the Dead are the only ones I have seen of his and New York was the same way, good performances but something about the movie just made it seem flat. Anyway, I give this 3 out of 4 stars. I want to see Sideways next because I hear that is good and Paul Giamatti (Pig Vomit) shoudl of had a best actor nomination from what I understand. He and Leo are truly under rated actors. Stuboy, you definatly have to have Pig Vomit and Leo in your movies.

Lloyd: "He must work out."

Well, I was cruising down Howard Hughs Drive in Culver City and I thought to myself, I should see the Heaviator. So I drove over to the Howard Hughs Center and watched it. Not really what happened eventhough those places exist, but here is my schpeel.

Scorsese really captured the time period well I thought, though like the boys I believe some scenes were long and the movie moved a little slow. I thought Leo and the other actors did an excellent job. Like Kaing, I havent seen the other best actor nominees but Leo definetly deserves a shot at it. Though I believe Jaime Foxx has all ready bought the award for his role in the movie Gay. I know you hesses like harassing Alec Baldwin for having a stiffy during the movie, but the movies you speak of he is playing the part of real stiff individuals so I dont have a problem with it. The ending of the movie was a bit dissapointing but how else could the movie have ended I guess? Maybe I was hoping to see the Monte Burns Casino Howard Hughs. Overall it was an entertaining movie, Scorsese captured Hughs life very well even though his life is quite obnoxious. I give the heaviator a 3.14159 stars out of 4. I dont know if you hesses saw it, but Scorsese made his cameo as the doctor after Hughs crashes his plane. He makes small cameos on a lot of his movies, he was a rich dude in Gangs of NY, the house where the ko sneaks in and steals shit.

Since you stus have seen very few Scorsese movies, here are some I highly recommend as they kick ass: Casino and Goodfellas. (Wuss you should see Casino before we go to Vegas, it will make you think) If you like those you might like some of his other flicks but those are definetly the best. Maybe ubstudios can make a gangsta movie if u like those, that would be cool.
Oh Leeroy what a knockout!
